Best Heritage Hotels in India: Gogunda Palace
A 16th Century Palace Hotel
In Rajasthan, Gogunda Palace was strategically built as the capital of Mewar, ruled by the illustrious Hindu Rajput King, Maharana Pratap Singh. He triumphed over Mughal Emperor Akbar, restoring Mewar's glory. Today, it stands as one of the remarkable hotels in Rajasthan.
This was the suite where the coronation of one of the greatest Rajput kings, Maharana Pratap Singh took place to become the 54th Maharana of Mewar of the Sisodia Dynasty after the death of his father, Udai Singh II.
These suites were formerly part of the honoured private residential wing of the menfolk of the Sisodia Dynasty to which Maharana Pratap belonged. The focus is on opulence and grandeur with a hint of masculine undertones.
With focus on vivid colour and rich Mewari art, these suites contain an mirror wall akin to the the Glass palace (known as the Sheesh Mahal). The walls are adorned with hand-painted Shekhavati murals.
These rooms were formerly part of a stable for the family of Maharana Pratap Singh. In these rooms was situated the Horse Temple, an alter where horses were anointed before riding off to battle.
